Sand Dune Photographs

Sand moves and sand moves me. For a photographer, the most exciting time on the dunes is in a gale. For everyone else, hope for a calm day! Light changes and reflects and light has changed me and caused me to reflect. Texture adds depth to sensuous lines created in the sand by wind and light. Let your emotions sink into these images!

Evening Dune Breeze

It was dusk and 105 degrees still on the dunes at Death Valley. A smoky haze loomed in the distance. A drying breeze washed across the dunes on this summer evening, making me wish I had brought two more water bottles. More sensible photographers would not have been there.

Forgotten Memories

This soaptree yucca creates designs in the sand as soft winds blow its lower spears from side to side. But stronger winds soon erase these memories, smoothing out the sand for a new start. In life it takes a bit more effort to wipe away old memories to start afresh. But standing firmly as this yucca can result in that new start to renew spirit and soul.

An evening at White Sands National Park. Special permits make it possible for photographers to go farther.

Ibex Cream

This was one of those scenes that a photographer just accidentally finds on an early morning wander. This image was a winner in a Landscape Photography Magazine contest.

Totem Dunes

Tracks on the foreground dune tell a story of the abundant life on the dunes after dark. In the morning, that life had taken cover, leaving the sunrise for us to enjoy alone.

Blue Salt Bed

Much like sand dunes, the bed of the Death Valley salt flats reflects the color of the sky in morning and evening hours.

Run for the Sun

I was photographing the sun shining through a sandstorm, when a runner started ascending toward the sun. I did not pay him because he didn't ask!

White Sands Sunset

The sands at White Sands National Park pick up the sky colors during beautiful evening.

Listen to the Quiet

A in total silence, a shapely dune rises in front of the morning sky.

Wind blows sand across the foreground as our eye is led to the tall dunes and mountains in the distance.
